With the snow, that means lots of work for me, hauling water out for all 4 coops & keeping paths shoveled for the birds so they are able to go out. With the large coop I don't keep the water in the coop because of the shear number of birds. I don't want the extra moisture inside so I have a table of sorts that I cover 3 sides with dark plastic. That keeps the snow from drifting into the heated water dish. I have to keep a pretty good sized area shoveled out to encourage the chickens to come out in the snow. Whenever I need to do a coop cleanout I put the old shavings down in the run & pathways so its not so cold on their feet. I also put out a flock block that I cover with a plastic tub. When I want to encourage the birds to stay out on nicer days I uncover it for a while.
That sounds like so much work! Granny has to do the same carrying water and stuff. I honestly don't think I would do it anymore. My above ground pipes and hoses freeze every now and again, but wintering here is so easy. Throw a bag of shavings down and put plastic on the bars to break the wind. It'll be like your spring thaw, a muddy snotty mess.
Well, if I wasn't so far, i'd love to meet ya! DH and I are hoping to leave Ca within a couple years. NC is one of the spots we're considering. I've been all around Hendersonville and Lincolnton, Asheville. Maybe SC Tenn or KY. Might have to settle for AZ.
I'd come! Count me in.
it wasn't the contest as you can still vote and The winner gets a congrats from the head of the contest. I wasn't notified about my golden feather or winning the contest but that's because Yahoo was screwed up.
