Hey guys, when's a good time to candle the first time? I'm new to this and I will be candling goose and Muscovy duck eggs. Today is day 7.
Now is the best time.
For ducks you usually candle on the 7th, 14th, and the 21st.
Here are the new chicks!
Sorry that some aren't the best quality pictures but I've determined that chicks don't like to have their pictures taken.
I just blame it on the camera.
Here's one of the bearded ones.
I have never had a bearded chick before so this is pretty neat.
Our favorite "little blue" (even though he's gray)
I think this one is different because of it's face.

Also, you can candle as many times as you want, just make sure it is after the 7th day and before lockdown.
Going by the 7, 14, and 21 schedule just keeps you on top of removing dead eggs likley to explode in the incubator.

I have 26 due on 4/4. One repaired egg appears to have the chick stuck in the bottom of the egg where the repair is. The egg is huge, and the chick is still active, so we'll see what happens with that. I just took the eggs out of the cartons and laid them flat today. Not much room in the incubator!

Ah, convert that thing over to a fan unit. They have conversion kits on eBay that go for only 20 or so, but you will see your hatch rates improve DRAMATICALLY. Mailed eggs are hard depending on the distance they come. But doing it with still air is difficult at best. If you need help finding one, I can point you in the right direction. Send me a private message and I'll pop over some links of different sellers that carry them. I think Coops n More had them last year and if I'm not mistaken that's where I got my conversion kits from. I keep a few of those stryo incubators around in case one of my sportsmans decides to pitch a fit. I got the incubators from my co-op on special for like 30 a piece or something. Then i got the conversion kits and auto turners from ebay because they were cheaper. Make sense?
Oh and on the ostriches. We set 11. 10 hatched
I have 15 chicken eggs in my incubator due April 6th. This is my first time incubating eggs. I have my fingers crossed that most of them will hatch.
