This Thread is in response to PMed requests to open up my "member article" to everyone...

This Thread is dedicated to open knowledge for people living in America who wish to breed these birds for BOTH fun and profit!

This group hopefully will be filled up with only fun positive people...
mean people need not apply...

As in all my passed writings here in BYC, There WILL be lots of chronological pictures posted here,
as myself, blackbirds13, and many new American breeders of these fantastic birds:
1. set up their farms
2. receive their breeding stock
3. raise them to breeding age
4. candle and incubate their 1st eggs
and
5. bring their "babies" to market

Join members like Blackbirds13 and myself on our live Journey of fun and profit...

Experienced breeders like wolfwhyte are invited to write articles of advice and to post farm pictures here as well...

Hello folks!
My name is Jerry, aka: Steadfast,

I am the proud owner of 21 chickens of various breeds and sizes.

I currently have purchased five 3 month old birds, waiting to be integrated into my big flock by early April.
They are currently living in this my latest Side Coop design which will need some renovation to be made ready for my new cemanis.


So, because of my chicken back log...and my imminant (soon to be documented) renovations,
I have requested and will be recieving my black birds in late April 2014...

Hi, I don't raise Ayam Cemani's but I have their closely related and very rare cousin the Svart Hona (Swedish Black Hen.)
There is not much of a difference between the two breeds except for sometimes size depending upon bloodline.

I imported my birds legally from the UK.

Here is a picture of one of my roosters. I've been breeding them since 2012

Hi,
I'm expecting a couple pairs myself from Wolfwhyte - 2 separate shipments I think. His lines of birds have an interesting story here in the US. Excited about seeing them this spring. I only have 2 breeds I breed - Marans and Legbars. Thanks for starting a new thread Steadfast, and yes lets keep it fun and open to all.

Boykin2010 your Svart Hona is a beautiful bird. Wish I could afford them.

Update:
This weekend I NEED to get my seedlings started for my Medicinal Garden this year.




But, Next weekend, I plan to do all the renovations on the Cemani's coop to divide it in half,
making it into a 2 lane coop for BOTH roosters to be dominant and freely breed with all 4 hens ....




I have to:
1. rip off that stupid door,
2. raise the wire covered run up to a 7 foot hight, (I'm Sick to death stooping over whenever I have to enter it)
--add a hard roof, and install various roosts,
3. divide the coop and covered run in half with chicken wire,
4. build 6 doors for access to both sides,
and
5. build an additional feeding station and waterer for both sides.

Hopefully it will take only 2 days
(I promise to take and post tons of pictures)

I should be receiving my pair at the beginning of April. I am going to need to build a third bigger coop I think. I brood outdoors so need to get the heat and lights set up as it's still winter up here. I'll keep them inside for a few days then out they go.



My two bigger coops and pens.
There are two smaller coops and pens to the right and out of the photo. I have another 2 separated dog house coops and pens and then my brooder and then another small coop that is not penned where I'm going to have my free rangers. The chicks will be in the brooder for 3-4 weeks before I put them in their pen. I have not started hatching my own eggs so I have the time to spare. Wish it were warmer but this is New England. I started brooding outdoors because I just cannot stand the smell and dust they produce

and feel like a crazy lady changing the litter and cleaning the brooders every day. Looking forward to spring and my own gardening plans this year.

This is what I know about the Ayam Cemani that are from the lines of Wolfwhyte on BYC:
In 1989, he started working for S. Dillon Ripley. Ripley was head of the Smithsonian from 1965 to 1985 and started the festival of Indonesia at the Smithsonian. Ripley managed to get some Cemanis for it and Mike also imported his present stock at that time in 1994 from the same source. Ripley's went to the festival and then were brought back to his farm but due to their poor laying he replaced them with Marans in 1990. They were then given to a benefactor of the Smithsonian. She recently died and Mike bought what she had left which was two roosters and six hens. Both lines of his stock come from the same place but have not been crossed for about thirty years.

Toni-Marie’s line was imported by her in 2007 I believe

Greenfire Farms imported their Ayam Cemani from UK stock in 2012 I think.

There is mention of a gentleman called Chris Charles and I am sure there are more lines that I am unaware of so if any other information is known, those folks are encouraged to post.

If Ayam Cemani have been in the US for 30 years, why aren't they more widespread and readily available?
