Dehydrators - anybody use them?

EXCALIBUR!!!!
We have had a 9 tray for 8 years now and love it! It has a 10 year warranty. We use it constantly for many things. Dehydrating foods, fruit roll ups, yogurts, bread rises, jerkies, dehydrating sprouts to make sprouted flours, and I'm sure there's more we've done!

We had to have the entire case replaced, because it cracked during a move, they were nice and very quick on sending us a new case for free (under warranty)! They are more than worth the cost!

I use the round American Harvest dehydrator. I've had mine for 15 years or so. Love it!

Get one with an adjustable temperature, as different foods do better at different temps. A good fan speeds the drying process and makes it more even.

But it may be that you are just impatient. "Fast dehydrating" has another name -- baking.

FYI, when I am making jerky, I do it in the oven on the lowest possible setting. Gives a chewy texture, while the dehydrator makes it crispy.

That's with a gas oven. We just moved to a house with an electric oven. Haven't tried it yet.

I use a Ronco with the extra trays (7) total. We love the way the jerky comes out, it softens up if you put it in plastic baggies. Fruits and Veges always come out perfect! I've even dried herbs and flowers. The Ronco has been great for large amounts at once without having to use those huge cabinet type dehydrators. Tina

We have an Excalibur food dehydrator with 6 trays. We use it for jerky, summer squash, strawberries, blueberries, and herbs.

Let's say you were drying 3/8 inch thick slices of tomato, cut in half. How long would it take in your dehydrator? It would take close to two to two and a half or more days in mine. It does have a fan, but you can't adjust the heat. Thanks for your input, folks!

My Excalibur would take about 12 hours (depending on the humidity in the house).
And someone mentioned having a temperature control, I agree! Excaliburs come with or without. Mine is with and is used all of the time. It does make a huge difference.
