I have an almost 2yo lady named Lucy. We are in Iowa and we had our first "deep" freeze first part of January. I noticed that the others were picking on her and that she appeared to be molting (because a bunch of feathers were off in one spot on her back/lower area). I separated her because she seemed like she lost weight and I didn't want her to freeze. I have not been able to put her back successfully yet because they constantly bombard her (I have 5 total including her). There is plenty of space to run in an enclosed area as well as a big coop. I let them free range in the yard when I can somewhat supervise.

Fast forward to about 2-3 weeks ago. She seemed lethargic and making her eye lids cover her eyes. I could monitor her poop because she was already separated in a cage in the garage with a heat lamp. It was runny and greenish yellow. I brought her in the house, gave her an Epsom salt bath and she drank 1oz of the salt water (fresh not bath water) right down. By morning she seemed SO much better, eating normally. Back out to the garage she went.

Now a little bit about her egg laying. She has laid 3 tiny eggs (no yolk) and one normal one since I separated her (January). Before that I had found 2-4 of the same tiny eggs in/around the coop area/nesting boxes (never knew who it had come from). 2 days ago she had one of those little eggs and I noticed her acting different right away: not getting up when I came in the garage, hadn't eaten or drank much. Moving slowly when having free ranging or in the run (away from the others). Brought her inside, same treatment as before. She did NOT drink the salt water as she had before and really didn't drink much of anything, but ate well. Back out to the garage she went. She still appears to not be drinking much, but eating some.

Again outside today she is moving slowly, but drank some rain water that had pooled in a bucket lid. Ate some treats but refused the electrolyte drinking water. I am about to move her into a separated area of the run so she can begin to acclimate back to the regular daily rhythms and be around her flock. She seems to want to be with them terribly (pacing along the fence where they are, despite them pecking on her). I felt under her bottom and it feels squishy (but maybe it's supposed to feel like that). It does not appear to be full of fluid and she didn't make any uncomfortable noises when I did so. Her poo is still runny and green and she wasn't making her normal noises today either.

I was thinking of giving her a little bit of Duramycin 10 to see if it might help with anything I'm missing. I've read that it can help with egg yolk peritonitis. I'm aware of the egg holding and know that it seems to be given with more respiratory issues (which I don't really see). I want to be able to help her but don't know which direction to go. None of the vets have been very knowledgeable and I cannot afford to take her in to be see either.

any thoughts?
Thank you!

My concern is reproductive issues due to all the eggs she is laying that contain no yolk. The yolks are released from ovary, travel down oviduct to acquire whites/membranes/shell/shell color. When you break open one of these eggs,is there any pieces of tissue(would be very small)in egg white content? The reason i am asking is that if pieces of her repro tract break free, this sml piece of tissue often will be treated as the yolk(tricks the body into thinking this is the yolk)or yolk may be migrating to abdominal cavity( internal laying). The eggs are tiny b/c they contain no yolk. While small eggs containing no yolks can be found in new layers or older hens,if nothing more than a glitch in repro system the condition corrects itself with normal eggs being laid.

Here is a link regarding peritonitis, this will also link you back to BYC forum regarding hens w peritonitis,in link there is mention of a drug used to stop laying in hens.

Thanks Ten Chicks. Yes I agree, there seems to be a glitch in her reproductive track. Wednesday of this last week, she layed another small egg. When I opened it up, there was a little glob of the tissue you mentioned. By Thursday evening I was noticing her moving a bit slower than usual, but still acting ok. By this weekend, there is a noticeable difference in her. Not wanting to walk much, when I feel her lower abdomen, she acts like it hurts or bothers her. She was eating and drinking decent yesterday (Saturday) but not much today.

I'm trying to dose her with Epsom salt water to drink and olive oil treats, but she didn't get much of either down her today :( I just can't give her baths and keep her in the house every other week. so if she clears up on her own and gets better with the little bit of treatment, then great, otherwise nature will just have to take it's course sadly.

I'm wondering if I should just dose her on antibiotics regularly to help with any infection that might be brewing. I don't care that I won't get to eat her eggs, it's not like she's laying regular ones anyways...

Thank you for your input.

Lucy passed away this evening. She hadn't eaten or drank much in the last few days despite giving her sips with a syringe. she just filled with fluid and was having trouble breathing. She spent most of yesterday evening and this morning with us doting on her. She was well loved.
