Chicken breeds

No Probs. Once again, sorry, but I'm very amateur with chickens. I only know of a few breeds. Good luck with getting your hens, though!

No need to be sorry - I check out every single breed and suggestion you guys make - your eisers are similar to the ex-battery hens I rescued. Great hens with lots of personality !

Why not look for a barnyard mix of some breeds you like? Then they will have hybrid vigor so are less likely to have health complications down the line.

Could you buy eggs and hatch your own?

I do not have the facilities to hatch my own - wish I did - but I do not have separate facilities for them - plus with my other animals its not a good idea to have youngsters around. My dogs start to drool when they see the chickens. One cat is terrified of them - the other terrifies them - mind you I think it would be a different story if there was not the fencing between them, nearly all healthy hens can cope with a domestic moggie.

The three I mentioned in a previous post are all hybrids - I don't know what it is like with you guys but here hybrids are usually the high rate layers the blue ranger being the 'worst' layer I can find.

I think I just might have to go with the blue rangers - I like them anyway. Looks like the neighbours will be getting even more eggs - which at least keeps them sweet - they even give me their grass clippings, dig up their dandelions for my girls, and pass over the scrap veggies and lettuces.

Thanks guys for your thoughts.

Well, there's a difference between a hatchery hybrid and a barnyard mix hybrid. The hatcheries churn them out to churn out as many eggs as possible. With the barnyard varieties, they take on the traits from the parents and haven't been selectively bred for high production.

Out of the three breeders in my county that I would use - I believe only one of them might be able to produce something 'different' - I am going down there next week to have a look and talk to them. Most people here if they keep chickens want the high layers - I am the odd one out. The hens I have give me sufficient eggs for my needs - extras go to the neighbours - I really just want another two or three hens to add to my flock (to replace some that have either died or been rehomed) and would prefer a longer lived hen rather than one bred to produce lots of eggs.

Hopefully the breeder will be able to come up with suitable suggestions for me. I only know 4 other people with hens in my locality - and none of them are allowed cocks so they cannot breed themselves. Another thing I could do is look for people wishing to rehome an older hen (have had them in the past) - the only problem is you never know what problems the hen might have and the conditions she has had to endure in the past.

Thanks guys - I think talking to the breeder may be my way to go - he has about 12 different breeds so could possibly sort me out.

Hi! I have some Chickens that Might be Good for You! Silkies are the Sweetest Little Puff Balls. But they Are Not really Good at Laying Eggs, But they still do. They usually Lay about 1 every 2-3 Days. A little off on some other Breeds of Chickens but Silkies are the SWEETEST little Chickens. If You get a Roo, and worried about the Crow, they are Not as Loud as some other Chicken Breeds. Another One/Last One will be a Polish. Amazing Birds. Their Top Hat/Crest Can get over their Head and cant See that well. So You can Check on it and It will make them happy if You Trim it. They are also Skittish. Almost Scared of everything, I have 1 Hen and 1 Roo but the other Roo died. ;( . So My Hen whenever you Yawn or Blow on her she always Jumps and runs. So I can Count on My Little Polish Hen Laying 1 every 2 Days. Or Sometimes everyday... Those are My 2 Favorite. I have More Breeds But I Know More about these Two Breeds. Hope You Find this Useful. I Hope You enjoy Your Chickens! They are Lots of Fun!! ;)! Have a Good Day! And a Great Weekend!

ZuZuLove!

I don't know how it would work but maybe you could borrow a rooster for a few weeks or loan a rooster/hen for a few weeks.

Hi guys

Just an update on my new girls. In the end I decided to get another coop so I have two now, and got an additional 8 girls, I ended up with :

1 Buff Barred (Buffy)
2 Silver Stars (Snowy and Snowflake)
2 Blue Rangers (Misty and Belle)
3 Amber Stars) (Amber, Goldie and Flecks)

Most did a runner when I approached as they are still skittish but here are a couple of piccies

All are now laying and I average 5 eggs a day from the 8 new girls and I am happy with that - a friend is taking 2 doz eggs a week. I have room for another 4-6 girls and will probably get them next year (chicken math strikes again) - instead of spreading out between the two coops - all the new girls cram into the new coop (It is designed for 8-12 birds) - but they lay their eggs in the old coop.
