Best type of roost? Weigh in with your design opinion.

For all of you chicken nuts, myself included, just an observation from everyone's post's and pictures, do you realize that although you think painting the inside of your coops is a good thing, maybe so if you are covering osb or plywood, which both contain none organic chemicals in the glue used adhere the wood chips or layers together, I worked in a plant that made both materials, sometimes our eyes would burn from fumes until dried, how ever some of those fumes will be released under wet or humid conditions, i think it is better for your chickens if you use untreated boards or metal siding where possible for everything but the floors and then you would paint it, i will be using natural dirt for my floor.I want chemical free chickens. I am old school, comments welcome

From one chicken nut to another: As much as I adore the painted interiors, I have not painted the interior of either of my coops, though I have agonized over whether or not to. The walls are osb, smooth side facing the inside, the floors and poop boards are moisture resistant zipsystem plywood. It's too late at this point since the first was built 6 months ago and the second is almost finished. But is there something I should be doing to increase the safety of this material?

Type in soy based wood sealant in your search bar, you can use a spray bottle to apply it on a warm day to allow for drying before your chickens go in at night, i wouldn't be too concerned with the floor, just the walls and ceiling

Our coop has a mezzanine where our 5 girls roost, and under it, lies 4 old cookie sheets, side by side, that catch their droppings.
On top of the cookie sheets is a mesh so they can't step in the pooh (we had an old antenna and the mesh was taken off of it).
The roost bar was first a de-burred maple tree branch, but fall came and I replaced it with a 2 x 3 so their feathers would keep their feet warm in our Minnesota winters.
This second floor is only as wide/deep as the cookie sheets and is close to the two upper windows on each side of the coop so the girls can look out the window and sit up there when the sun is coming through. Their walk plank is where they sit by the window and watch me come out, knowing I have some kind of treat for them.

Best part though: all I have to do each morning, is tip the sheets into the plastic pot (under coop) to empty them (for the compost), put them back, check their food and water, and they're all set. The cookie sheets are supported by two 1x1's going across (garage sale/an old quilting stand taken apart) and an aluminum sheet, in 2 pieces, cut to size and up the back wall, so I can easily remove them for cleaning. Note: if you cut any metal, de-burr the edges or tuck sharp edges under so your chickens or you, don't get cut.
Happy Chickens to you all! Hope your girls make you laugh every day, like ours do!! -Diane in Minnesota
