CHEAP chick brooder

Does anyone have any ideas for a chick brooder to hold around 150 chicks

I tried to put fifty chick's in my brooder once and the brooder was three foot by three foot and that is what the brooder was rated for and the chicks just peaked each other ....

there is a lot of room in these professional brooders ....

Sounds like you might want to make several brooders for that many chicks if you would like more of them to live and remember they grow so fast so you might want to have there larger fenced area ready if you don't have one assembled already ........

Good luck with such a large project ....

Layers so about 3 weeks

*I* would look for a setup that would allow a minimum of 1 square foot per bird - and more is always better as the more space the lower the risks for stress related issues to arise (yes, even at that young age). If you don't have a building (ie shed, etc) to dedicate to brooding your birds you may be better off looking at setting up multiple smaller brooders into which you can break up the total number of birds into more manageable groups.

I see that there has been some interest in Mama Heating Pad caves. (Thanks azygous and Lazy Gardener!) I think I can help out a bit here. So I'll provide a couple of links where those of you who are interested can get more information.

Hey, azygous...where did you post the photos of your portal doors for brooding outside? I mentioned that in my article about brooding in the coop or run but can't find a direct way to find it again. I think people would find that incredibly helpful. I'm sure going to use it for my next batch of chicks.
