I hatched 80 brown coturnix chicks three days ago and out of the 80 13 are yellow chicks the rest brown. This is my second hatch of eggs and my friend that I got the eggs from has had six hatches and none of the others have been yellow. Is this normal or any ideas what is happening? Also wondering what color they will be when grown?

I never have quite that many white chicks, but every hatch i always have a few white chicks. All my Coturnix are brown. It's a genetic thing. Probably some of your friends quail carry the white A&M gene. The chicks will grow just as big as the others. The white birds are just harder to tell the sex of than brown quail. Some of my white birds even develop some brown feathers making them brown and white mix.

Brown or pharaoh colored quail often carry recessive white genes. Just means your roo has recessive white and so does the hen responsible for the eggs the white chicks came from. They won't be solid white they'll have some brown spots, usually on the head or lower back or both.

Thanks for the info and yes they are starting to turn white. Just like you said DC everyone has a brown spot on its head and several have brown spots on their backs. All doing great only lost one of the 80. I set another 114 eggs so can't wait to see what they look like.
