I have 8 laying hens, all laying since late fall, early winter. Their eggs have been almost perfect with just one or two odd ones over the months. Now, within 2 days I found a rubber egg in the nest box and 2 under the roost. I don't feed layer feed because I read it was too much calcium for roosters and younger pullets. They have organic grower feed, they free range and always have oyster shell available. Any ideas?

I have read that if you give them growers and oyster shell the layers will take the calcium they need. Mine lay occasional soft shelled eggs and occasionally on or under the roost. Then go back to doing it perfectly. I just accept it as a temporary blip in egg production and reckon it's just the norm. Try not to worry unless it happens relentlessly

Thanks for the information. Today I got 4 perfectly normal eggs. I will just keep an eye on things and hopefully it was just one of those occasional odd egg occurrences.

We had our first rubber egg today. The hens are just over a year old and have laid regularly since last year, even through the winter. Our chickens free range, they have access to plenty of water, food, grit, bugs, they even enjoy the fine gravel in our driveway. It was laid in the middle of coop which has never happened. I have included a picture of the rubber egg and a normal one from that hen.

Yes MrsLane, that is pretty much the same scenario that I encountered. Since then I have had only one other such egg laid from the perch over night. I'm sure however it wont be the last.
