This is a prototype of a pneumatic chicken coop door I put together in my garage. I figured it would be wise to perfect this contraption before I installed it to the coop. Plus! With this past winter being as brutal as it was it was alot warmer in there. I actually have this on the coop fully functioning and as proud as can be (being I am new with pneumatics). I had most parts laying around my garage so I figured why not make a automatic coop door. Now I'm just waiting on a thank you from the chickens!
 
Good work! But don't hold your breath waiting for that 'thank you' from the chooks, chances are the closest you'll get is a rooster (or a hen, if you don't have a rooster) making a ruckus outside your bedroom window at some unholy hour.

Why didn't you just buy one? Wanted the challenge?

It definitely can be more expensive. I love to build things or even buy things and tear them apart to make them better. Some folks love to tinker.

Yeah, true, and many times you can make something better suited to your needs than what you can buy.

I make my own cages, travel cages and living ones alike, and am always aghast at the prices asked for the weak pieces of fecal matter they sell in shops and livestock publications. I was surprised how many people traveled miles to pick up my old cages when I moved house, given that the cages are random frankensteins composed of scraps and usually held together with wire. I love wire as a building tool, lol. ;)

I used assorted mesh, trampoline frames, bedframes, fences, gates, fridge shelving, all manner of random metal scraps to make purpose built mobile cages, lol... Still more useful, not to mention much longer-lived and easier to disinfect or clean, than those wooden monstrosities you can buy.
