rontt1 .... I'm very happy with this - and if I mix these little guys with the hen and roo I already have - my grand plans for a really solid flock have finally landed. (mu-ha ha ha ha)

I love these in splash. Absolutely beautiful. The blue hen I have has what i would characterize as a splash type pattern...

I'll share pics as they grow out ! :)

Now that I will have some good genetic diversity ... I can really breed for the egg color ... which I don't find a very deep blue .... any input from you guys on developing strong blue in the egg color ?

Of course I am way ahead of the curve - since these babies are still under a heat lamp! ha ha ha ha

The blue (one copy of the blue gene) color of these birds is a solid medium to deep grey with faint lacing. Blue birds do not have dark flecks. The hen on the right is blue -

Splash (two copies) are various shades of very light grey to almost white (dirty white), often with dark grey flecks.
My splash roo

And due to the inhertiance of the blue gene, birds can also be black if they do not inherit any copies of the blue gene.

Breeding splash to splash repeatedly tends to wash the color out, so breeding back to black or blue is a good idea.

1muttsfan: GREAT ! Those pictures were very helpful !

Oh - a little plug for myself ... I am only doing this here because it is FREE - so not asking you to buy anything.

Kindle is offering my book free today - so you can download it now and read it later ...

It is geared toward young boys - just starting to read chapter books... theme is western, written with good old-fashioned values (but not mentioning religion) and in a more modern style for kids today.

All places are REAL - and I have some real pictures from the historical society of the town it is set in.

if you like it - it would really help me if you left a nice review on amazon.com

I have a better Blue pics here on my computer - these are brown red and lemon blue cochins, you can see each feather edge is slightly darker.

Here are the birds as chicks, all the silvery grey ones are splash, and the one dark grey one a blue

Oh - that's even more helpful - so then it does look like I have 2 blue and a mix of splash .... I am curious to see if my blues have a nice lacing - that is something I have always thought was very pretty.

Author - sort of - I got commissioned to write one for young girls - then one for young boys .... when the person that did the commission died - his wife very VERY kindly said since they didn't have time to publish - she gave me back all rights to the story along with a small publisher in California ... so I wrote it - and like it very much .... but it is not the book of my heart ... if you understand ? That book is on the way - and will have an easier time of it if these kids books do well and get good reviews. ha ha Mostly what I do is edit other people's work. Like an English teacher :)

Im having a hard time determining what kind of comb these birds are supposed to have. A number of them look rose combed some look single comb. The combs seem all over the place.
