new to byc

Congrats on the approval for baby hens! It'll be fun and exciting. Most cities will not allow roosters, unfortunately. :( Have to move to the country for that.

Well that's our plan in a few years. We are in a rural area but it's considered residential. . Another mile down the road and I wouldn't have this issue. Just not meant to have the roo now...but someday :)

New to BYC also and I agree this website is so helpful. I designed our chicken coup from studying the coop section. This is a wealth of information. The learning center has guided us thru purchasing our first three chickens, a Welsummer, Lucy, an Easter Egger, Mary Beth and a Black and Copper Maran, Wanda. They are now a month old and we are putting together a larger home for them, they grow so fast but are not ready for the coop yet. I live in Jackson CA and about the time our first 3 are ready for outside the weather should be warm. We are purchasing 3 more chicks next week, a Frizzle or Silkie, a Silver Lace Wyandotte, and a Buff Orpington. Bit of a problem with the terrier tho. I have gotten some ideas from posts how to handle it. After many exposures to the chicks and the fact that they are now quite a bit larger she is better about being around them. She does kill gophers and rats on our land so she has that instinct. Our other dog, an Aus Shep. pup was pecked on the nose by one of the chicks early on and won't have anything more to do with them.
