Right now the 4 week old chicks are on free choice grains their little space under the coop is almost grazed out. My biggest question is if they free rang or even set up rotating pasture. Do you keep feed out or do you feed morning and night? My parents fed in the morning and usually scraps in evening and a scoop feed.they didnt keep food out and ours was in a big lot

I've always just free fed. I put feed in the feeder when it's empty. That's not necessarily every day....depending on how much feed I added last time and how much scraps, etc I've fed. It's just easier for me, I don't have to worry about a lower ranked bird not getting to eat, or things like that cause the feed's just always there.

I apply enough feed in feeder so they can fill crop in morning with some feed leftover yet for feeder always to be empty by nightfall. Ensures at least a maintenance level of feed, motivation to forage, and reduces attractant for predators and pest that would first come to consume feed at night. This assumes you have adequate forage quality and quantity. I feel crops at night just after they go to roost to make certain they are eating well and also watch how far out they go for eats.

I have feild above coop for horses and a section that is about 20x18 with part of that planting hrbs either for me and them or just me .. ir just them however it evens out. They will defentelly have our whole front yard like over 2 acers till road. So think should have enough to forage but here is my plan see what ya think.
I plan to feed grain and release from coop pen about 8at the latest. Then to just keep them from roaming too far call them back with treats or feed. Then at roosting time about 4or five use feed to get them in pen so they can go to coop at leasure
