Advice on Free Range Peafowl

Yes, the camels do seem to like it hear. The government was culling them, by shooting from a helicopter and leaving them there.

Thought you may be interested in a program we have called LANDLINE, which has a documentary on camel culling.

In regards to mating, by birds for the past month (in the meat shed) have been doing their calls, still don't understand the calls.
We do get summer rains here as it is the wheat belt, but there has been drought on an off.

Here are some pics - Kevin and Katie 1 year old not mating yet but very friendly and love each other.

the peppercorn tree where Kevin and Katie roost.

the meat house- frank and frieda - 3 yr old male and female younger
but has supposedly had her first clutch and hoping on the second, but there are no signs of laying.
Possibly as new environment and stressed by move.

Hi, thought you may be interested in their roosting at night. We have violent storms during the summer months, ie. dec-jan. today we had a big storm plus big winds. I was curious as to whether the kevin and kate would do the same roosting routine.
sure enough on dusk, the wandered up to the peppercorn tree jumped to the first branch then the second tier then the third.

Pointing their noses into the wind they steadied themselves and sat down.
Here are some pics of sunset/dusk and their tree

we always have beautiful sunsets in Mulyandry, NSW

I have over 50 peafowl free ranging here, when the weather is bad in the daytime they head straight to the barn and will remain there till it stops or till it is time to roost, then they head back up in the trees no matter how bad the weather is, they are peabrains.

Yes, mine love the barn or sitting on the ute or the dogs kennel, but when it comes to that witching hour on the dot, up in the trees.

As a biologist, other species do some at dusk as well, e.g. hermit crabs, land crabs.. or other ocopodes. Something primitive, some thing in
the genetics of animals and I guess humans. However humans are not as precise anymore.

Gonna be getting a few peachicks this Spring/summer and giving them the bantams' old coop which is a horse stall and something like a 6x25' and 7' tall. I am assuming that will be enough for two peafowl (a pair or trio for now ;) ) and a few turkeys, geese, ducks, etc. Need ideas for perches to build for them and also nest boxes. Plan to breed them for hatching by a friend. Will probably free range them when I am around in the large paddock with the sheep and pig.

Hello Peafowl Folks! Here is the coop we are converting into a peafowl pen for a peafowl trio this spring/ summer. Pictures make them look smaller. The run is 25 x 10' and aviary netted about 6 feet tall and the inside is 12 x 12 approximately. They will get high perches and larger next boxes. Wondering if the door is big enough? Can cut a bigger one. They will hopefully be free range eventually. Anything I need to know when converting for peafowl? Also wondering if peafowl will wake up the neighbors early in the morning. Barn keeps rooster sounds and quacking ducks and baaing sheep from waking up neighbors and should work for peas as well. I have read India blues aren't the noisiest. Hopefully a small number of peas and lots of distractions will keep them from calling all day long all year long. I am very excited to finally be getting some peafowl.

We have accepted noise is inevitable and if we are able to at least keep them from waking up neighbors at 4 am and not squawking all day long non-stop then we are fine. Thanks for the help!

Figure on giving them 3-4' lateral landing space for every foot high your roosts are. Peas aren't usually noisey year round, mostly during breeding season and then not constantly, so you should be all right there.
