New to BYC and incubating and need help ...

I keep mine in the kitchen or living room. It really doesn't matter if the rooms are a bit cool, as long as the temp is stable. You don't want to keep the bator near areas where cold air is going to flow over the bator like near an outside door or open windows. If it is always about the same cool temp, the bator will hold a good temp. It is when there is cold air always blowing around the bator and it can't keep the proper temp.

If your sewing room has quiet air in it and it remains fairly stable, this will be a good place to incubate. :)

So far R-Com 20 is doing great! We set 20 eggs in the standard chicken egg tray on 4/12 (mostly CCL's). Today is day 21 and so far we have 16 chicks (out of 18 eggs, 2 were infertile or stopped developing and were removed). Last 2 haven't pipped yet but they still have time. Only negative is that some eggs were too large in the tray and didn't make enough contact with the base to turn automatically. We ended up turning them manually 3x a day. Next time we will try the universal tray and limit to maybe 14 eggs. The only other negative is the size of the incubator for hatching chicks. We ultimately had to break down and open it up to take the first 10 out to make room since the hatchlings were laying all over the other hatching eggs. Opening it doesn't seem to have caused any issue (three more that had pipped hatched easily after we did) which I think is because the automatic humidity and heat came back up quickly after we closed it again.

I really appreciate the advice on the vinyl shelf liner. It worked great and cleanup will be much easier (just toss!). Can't wait to start the next bunch!

Congrats on the great hatch with your R-Com!! I have had egg turning issues to with my R-Com, but with quail eggs being too small to turn properly, and I too have had to turn some of the eggs. This may be a flaw in the R-Com design. But they do work well in all other respects.

Congrats on the hatch and enjoy your new babies!!
