please help my pekin duckling toby

You are right to notice the difference in their poop. I have a duck who as a duckling always had somewhat runny dark brown poo, and at first I was concerned. But it just appears there is something in her digestive system that causes that. They came from a reputable hatchery, have had good care, everyone seems fine. I remember being shocked one day - everyone had almost black feces…then I remembered the day before was their first day outside. They had eaten so much soil, it blackened their poo. sheesh.

So, I think we develop nerves of steel with these littles. Because they can hide illness, we need to watch for subtle changes. And not all the subtle changes mean they are ill. phew.

I feel much better about it all. Toby seems to be doing better and I didn't give him any medicine. Thanks for putting my mind at ease and giving me so much new information. Thank you all.

Toby is finally breathing through his nose again and there is no more clicking. There is still a slight whistle when he breathes but after his warm bath I think he is finally doing better. Thanks so much!

I know you will keep an eye on him. Please keep us posted.

Ok so toby is no oonger clicking when he breathes but there is a slight whistle still, he also seems to be breathing a bit faster. Tomorrow I will give him another hot bath. Should I try saoine water to help his breathing more? His energy is high and he is eating well, but he is still tiny compared to his sister. I think he might get through this :)

Elfie tended to whistle when breathing, just a bit. It was a nose whistle so nothing to worry about. When you say hot, you mean around 85˚F, yes? We don't want to overheat him!!!

I would not use saline internally - salt poisoning is an ugly way to go. If energy is high, he is eating, drinking, pooping, I would say keep up daily bath time, maybe add poultry vitamins to the water once a week or two, and keep watching. Some ducklings are just slow. Elf was about two weeks behind everyducky else for about six months.

Thank you! Yes I mean not too hot, but hot enough. They just started swimming in my bath tub and I was scared to leave them for too long because they couod get tired, but even though he is smaller toby was a great swimmer and seems to be doing totally fine. I haven't heard a sneeze or click or whistle from him in the past day or two so hopefully it stays this way. Thanks for your help! :) do you have any tips for the water all over there bedding, I am changing it sooo often because I know it needs to be dry, but I can't understand how they soke it so quickly.
