Omak Chicken Coop by Dave

Home made bacon from home made pig? Or you buy pork belly and smoke it yourself?

No pigs allowed where I am :(

Things are looking up... 9 eggs the last 8 days.... A different hen has entered the game.... She is a Sagitta, as is the other hen.... BUT.... She is laying Pinkish eggs..... AND they are bigger... those 2 pinks are her first 2 eggs.... I queried the breeder about color etc. and that is normal....
I'm thinking the 66 gram egg might be a double yolker.... At least, the new layer is using the community nest box.... maybe she will teach the "Lay it in any corner of the coop, as long as it's NOT in the community nest box."......
The rooster was in the nest box with her until I disturbed them.... then he strutted back-and-forth in front of it singing "The Egg Song"....
She must be one special hen......

I made 1 modification the birds told me I need to do.... As the weather cooled, they were roosting on the lowest roost / poop board to stay out of the draft that entered from the soffit vents.... Soooooo, I found some weed barrier cloth in the barn and stapled it to the rafters.... It's still porous and I think it will not form condensate that may drip on the birds..... Here it is.....

Love folowing your coop build. Wish I had seen this posting ealier in the summer. I mad too many errors as I was learning about chickens. Any way, I want to say thanks for posting. I am curious about your water system set up. I live in the San Luis Valley. I want to simplify my chicken care. It gets below zero every winter here I remember in 1973 the when I first came to the valley it was -50 for three days. I want to set up water system that won't be likely to freeze. Is your system able to have some heat tape? I am just now starting to think in those terms now that I have frozen water every morning. Any suggestions. I am missing your water set up some how.

Thanks.... here you go.... I use the spring loaded horizontal water nipples.. all the works are inside the pipe and keep warm... so far.... -50 may not work... If I did this again, I would use a larger diameter pipe for the down pipe... and probably insert a fish tank heater... reason, more thermal mass in the bigger diameter pipe.... I would still use the bucket heater...
