What Breed of chick is this?

Oh good. Thank you. I feel a little more confident to go ahead and order the eggs now. Wish me luck with the hatch!

Before you order, I'd PM Freds Hens. He does a bunch with heritage RIR, I believe.

It looked like the boy in the ad was a bit light to be heritage to me. You can also post your ad on the link I gave you above. Those folks will help you out. I only know enough about true RIR to be dangerous, unfortunately.

Dangerous?

Sure. You've never heard that expression before? It means that I have a lot of surface knowledge on the subject but no true deep knowledge, so I could easily and inadvertently steer you wrong. Which is why I suggested you contact FredsHens and/or the Heritage RIR thread.

Well I never, you learn something new every minute of the day! Thanks for your advice. I've been talking to a few RIR breeders here in Ireland and have gleaned quite a bit of knowledge. I now know that my RIR ladies are in fact hybrids - great layers, but not very good for breeding as they are usually crossed with a Light Sussex and RIR. So even if I put a pure bred RIR rooster in with them, there is no guarantee that they will produce RIRs - more likely to keep hatching mutts or "Backyard Specials". So I am in the process of purchasing some pure bred RIR chicks and/or fertile eggs from two different breeders. So, if I am lucky to hatch a rooster I can put it in the opposite camp so it is not mixing with his siblings.

Best of luck! You'll find that heritage RIR are very handsome birds that look quite different from their Production Red cousins. Enjoy your breeding project. I didn't know you weren't in the States--that makes your project a bit harder I'd think since RIR are such an American breed.

Also, you realize that there's nothing wrong with putting a heritage rooster in with Production Reds, right? As long as you don't hatch the eggs from the Production Reds you won't have mixed breed babies.
