I find reading about how folks sell there eggs and what they charge to be very interesting. It is a very wide range of thoughts, ideas, and prices. For me I sell my eggs for $5.00 a dozen or $4.50 if you bring me back an empty carton. 1/2 dozens are $3.00 no carton credit on 1/2 dozen. I pay about $.35 to $.45 of an empty carton at the feed store so it make sense to me. I have done the math and at the current price of food I need about $4.50 a dozen in order for money made on the eggs to be enough to pay for the food to feed the girls. I'm not looking to turn a profit, but if I can raise chickens for basically free I'm all for that. Yes, I have had a few people that did not want to buy from me when they heard how much I wanted a dozen. Other folks are just fine with it. And I haven't had a problem finding enough customers.
Also I have a little slip made up that explains the pricing, and what I will and won't take for an empty carton credit (I don't take the plastic cartons or anything other than 1 dozen size). And I slip that piece of paper inside each dozen I sell so everyone I sell to knows how it works.
