Can anyone tell me about this? I'm confused and a bit frustrated. Thanks.

I copied the info below from this site:

Histoplasmosis is a disease caused when airborne spores of the fungus Histoplasma capsulatum are inhaled into the lungs, the primary infection site. This microscopic fungus, which is found throughout the world in river valleys and soil where bird or bat droppings accumulate, is released into the air when soil is disturbed by plowing fields, sweeping chicken coops, or digging holes.
Histoplasmosis is often so mild that it produces no apparent symptoms. Any symptoms that might occur are often similar to those from a common cold. In fact, if you had histoplasmosis symptoms, you might dismiss them as those from a cold or flu, since the body’s immune system normally overcomes the infection in a few days without treatment
.

Dang, I guess I better protect myself when cleaning my cages.

I am on my last day of antibiotics fighting this nasty stuff. Was originally diagnosed as pneumonia, until my blood cultures came back. Been 10 days of misery. I'm guessing being to casual while cleaning the brooder out twice daily with 50 chicks in it was the culprit. Will be wearing a mask during cage cleanouts from here on out. Thinking once they move outside next week from the garage it won't be much of an issue. Great way to getting into keeping quail lol. I'm not giving up on them though. Just be more mindful from here on out.

I'm sorry you are dealing with this. Remember to get a good mask, such as an N-95 quality one and make sure it's properly fitting.

My dad is almost blind because of it and he never even had any birds. I looked into testing soil but couldn't find anything at all. They say wet everything down before cleaning but that doesn't seem like a great answer. I wonder if I could just keep my quail poo away from the dirt or clean well with bleach.

Is it ok to post a link like that?

Heres one other also on Wiki

The fungus is common, infections are not so much.

This bothers me a lot.

Do not trust the internet for important matters such as these.
You have no idea what source the materials even come form on Wiki.

I have personal experience I almost lost my lung due to Histo.
I got it from a air conditioner where bird feathers would drop down ( pigeons)
When I was fourteen and a tumor continued to grow in my lymph node for years.

My doctor who is a specialist in these types of illness said thats why YOU MOVE THE CHICKEN COOP FAR FROM THE HOUSE
Yet in URBAN CHICKENERY it seems we are all just crammin them in as close as they can be to the house.
My heart aches for kids like me exposed. It can go to your eyes and cause blindness , tumors in all organs etc. it is not some
"oh this is common thing".

One problem is we have lost our "old knowlege"of doing things and therefore a lot of people are going to develop serious health issues or die
BTW the docs wanted to REMOVE MY LUNG and told me I would be in a wheelchair at 19 years old.
