In Defense Of Breeders

HA, who knew chicken raising was just like politics?
interracial chicken marriages, kissing or no kissing,

personally, I am glad we all don't like the same thing, otherwise my fishing hole and backyard would be very crowded

I see real needs for all the breeding programs,

try to not be so defensive

Karen,

I am not breeding for the SOP, I am breeding for production first, my strain has been wining like crazy to those whom I have sold to. But I don't select for a SOP first, I don't and well not select for simple traits.

And because you have researched the history of Sussex you should know that until recently sussex have been more or less a land race with farmers not overly concerned with colour. And that Sussex were good meat birds by the way they were raised not only because they were bred to be meat birds. Also what I said is that I don't under stand why genetics get's lumped in with poultry showing, because it's not just the show breeders that are concerned with genetics.

Me too!

It very much is political but so are many things in life. It is interesting to compare the definitions of SOP for different poultry associations across the world.

I am trying very hard to get out there, but getting with getting the new micro hatchery set up I am going to need to work my butt off. You would be surprised at how hard it is to find a incubator bigger than a 1000 eggs, and smaller than 9000 thousand eggs!

I would love to try finishing extra cocks - the (good-ish) problem that I have is that my line produces more hens than cockerels, about 75% hens and 25% cockerels.... I have breed this strain for the last three years and I have had more pullets than cockerels every year. It's nut's and really a stroke of luck at this point, I am sure you know that hens determine the sex of the chick which is why I am saying it's a stroke of luck until I can test it out more....
