Hen laid first egg today

Hi - hope you don't mind me joining. My quails are 7 weeks and 2 days (44 days) - should I be expecting eggs? I keep them inside with us - they get a lot of light from the ceiling lights but not much outside time (just when we play with them on the grass). I have read that they lay at 42 days but I know from raising chickens they are not always on time. Are quails better?

Not all quail start laying at 8 weeks, some are a little less and some are more, but in any case, they will need to have 14+ hours of light per day in order to lay.

I got my first egg today. They are 6 weeks old and the boys are crowing like crazy. They are chasing the girls and some seem to be mating. Will wait before setting any eggs, we'll eat them until we're sure they are fertile.

Just found the first egg laid by my 3 chicks. I am assuming it was Betty due to her recent squatting fast as I neared her and her allowance of anyone petting her. I am so excited
