Hi all,
We have a black snake that is hanging around our chicken coop.
I have tried to move it but it keeps coming back.

My question is, are black snakes a threat to chickens ?

Also, is this a situation where I may need to kill the snake. I don't want
To kill unless it is necessary.

Thanks

Do you have a body of water near you? How big is it? Do you have a picture? I'm not an advocate of killing snakes. I'd rather have snakes and spiders around than the vermin and pests they control.

No I don't have water around, I do not have a pic either. I have a hen that is sitting on
Eggs. So I am concerned that it will eat her eggs or the chicks when they hatch.

Ok, I have a hen that is sitting. So it will not hurt her but will eat her eggs. That is not good
it could kill your hen if it is as big around as a dime or nickel (even though it couldn't eat her) si center she would defend her nest against it and it would try to defend itself against the hen.

I would definitely move it about 1/2 or 1 mile from where your hen is

it could. you said it was black so i'm guessing a rat snake. which i hate to kill. if your coop has a run you could look for a snake deterrent i've heard of moth balls and prob there are others. and put those around the run.

Ok, so it could harm her I think it is as big around as a quarter, it is a pretty good size, I think.

Thanks.

It is a black snake, I assume it is harmless, but maybe not so to my broody setting on eggs.
I will see if the mothballs work. I was not aware that snakes had such a keen sender of smell.

Just don't let the chickens eat the moth balls.. If you are sure it is not a poisonous snake, catch and relocate I would drop it of 5-10 miles away..
