Agressive Roosters and Free ranging

Yep, I had a couple mean roosters in the past and they all tasted great, I've also had great roosters that never even looked at a child or adult with aggression, I'd never waste time with the bad ones for a second after having the nice ones

I'll have to admit, I kinda forgot about the rats on a rope (small dog owners, please forgive me - it's just what we call 'em around here). I was thinking more about big dogs - dogs larger than a housecat. As an EMT, we've run into the same situation with little yappers. Fortunately, law enforcement accompanies us on most runs and can usually make sure the, uh, dog is contained. Small dogs seem much more prone to that behavior than large ones.

Also wondering about the fate of the rooster.
That's so funny, we call them rats on a string

Was there a difference in the roosters when young or how you raised them? I have a fairly young rooster that was just starting to crow when I got him and he was very calm when I held him but he has attacked me a few times when I am trying to gather up the hens into the run in in the evening.
If you have a nice rooster is he still good at protecting the flock? I need/want the protection of a rooster but I do not want an aggressive rooster.

I've only had a couple human aggressive roosters. The nice roosters I have are excellent flock protectors. I think the breed has a lot to do with it - both as aggressive and protective.
Gathering up the hens in the evening is perceived by the rooster as predator behavior.
If you're not time constrained and can let them go to roost on their own, you can avoid that perception.

IMO, aloof breeds like Mediterranean aren't often human aggressive. They're just not that into you. I've had about 80 Penedesenca roosters and never been attacked. They often get between me and the hens when I'm working but that's it.

Roosters that aren't human aggressive JUST AREN"T. There are many reasons for rooster attacks; wearing the wrong shoes, handling a hen, moving into his space, bad hair day. None work for me; if he's good, he's good; if he's a jerk, he goes. Mary

Well stated regarding roosters and dogs, and the double standard. I worked in home health for a few years, and was appalled at how owners would allow their dogs to interact in a negative way with me. I love dogs, and will crawl around on the floor and slobber all over a dog, under appropriate circumstances. But, in home health, i quickly learned to NEVER look at certain dogs, Never talk to those dogs, and it's already a volatile situation because you are a stranger in the dog's home, doing things with their person that the dog might not approve of!!! And most dog owners would not restrain their dog to an other room.

Bless your little girls heart! I too was attacked by my grannys rooster when I was a child. It jumped onto a go cart I was driving. It was soup th next day. But till this day im terrified of roosters. I will freak out if onecomes near me and im 40.
