Can anyone tell me if there's kinda a certain time chickens lay eggs.. like at dawn or something?? Sorry to be SO dumb but I've never had chickens before and my two girls are 19 wks and getting close I think. I ask this BECAUSE our coop in inside our screened lanai. I physically take them out to the enclosed area in our backyard every morning about 8:00 and bring them back in about 2:00 when it starts to get too hot (we're in Florida!). My concern is that they'll start laying eggs in the grass instead of in their nest in the coop?? Outside they DO have a little house to get in for protection from aerial predators, however we left it without a floor and put it where it's half grass and half sand so they can be safe, yet also peck and sand bathe!! Can anyone tell me what they think about this situation?? They have an awesome private two nests in their coop that I'd SO love them to utilize!! Thanks!!

Any time there is daylight is a good time to lay an egg

Mine usually lay sometime between 9 AM and noon. I'm not sure if this is normal or not but this seems to be the norm for them. Sometimes when I pick up the eggs when I go home for lunch, they are still warm. Sorry, but I think HeChicken was right "Any time there is daylight is a good time to lay an egg".

What about if you set up a nest box in the area they spend their days? That way there's a good chance they will use that if you let them out before they've laid their egg in the coop. Something like a covered cat litter box works well for that situation as it is inviting to them so they will likely use it, and you can move it around if need be.

You know that's a GREAT idea!! I'm going to look around the house right now and try to find something I can use. Any suggestions for use in there as bedding?? Should I just use pine shavings??

That's a very good idea HeChicken. I just saw another post about free ranging chickens and one person had nesting boxes in the coop but also had a "free range nesting box" out in the yard just in case the hens didn't want to walk all the way back to the house (she had a lot of land).

Pine shavings would work fine. Hay or straw work well too. Last year a friend of mine said she raked up grass clippings after they were dry and used those in the nest boxes - I'm thinking about trying that myself this year, though I wouldn't do that if any kind of pesticides or herbicides are used on the lawn.
