I have 3 acres adjacent to my grandparents 69 acre property. We got chicks and a duck in April so we have some nice size animals on out hands now.
Ive have been letting them roam during the day because we have not had any issues. Before letting them roam while I was at work, it had just been letting them out on weekends and after work just to let them stretch their legs and see what would happen. After seeing how well they did out and about without incident, I decided to let them roam everyday this week while I was at work… came home yesterday to only 2 chickens… no second Blck star or peking duck… Im so mad at myself, but mu husband s going to fence in an area this weekend :)
Just thought I'd share my loss. If you live in a wooded area, I guess you can only expect that a coyote or some other predator might get them! Keep your babies safe!

BTW didn't mention they have a coop they all share. Needless to say, they upside down water was much cleaner this morning due to sans duck last night.

I am sorry for your loss! Free ranging does pose risks of predators but the animals are happier. I would start looking around for track or signs of both the predators and your chickens. If you can find out what kind of predator got them you can take action against it. IE: Hawks don't like cd's hanging off of branches because they blind their sight for a second and move, foxes don't like urine from a larger male animal, snakes get eaten by both king snakes and guineas, and so on. We as a community have lots of ideas to keep predators at bay so if you can find signs of any or dead hen we can advise you of what you are dealing with and how to prevent attacks.

Thanks! I did not see anything except for deer tracks in the front, and Im pretty sure they haven't turned into carnivores! Im going to walk through the woods today to look for feathers or anything… Your tips were nice. Thank you!

How sad to lose them and not know what happened. Sorry for your loss.
