Got a 4 week old blue orpington with a protruding vent. Never had vent problems before so I came on here to research. I have put witch hazel on it for four days, and I don't see any change. Now what?

I recently helped one of my bantam hens with vent prolapse. I cleaned the area well so no poop was present then I put on a rubber glove ( the thin kind) used my little finger with some preparation H and slowly pushed my finger into her vent until I could feel the prolapse return to position. I kept her in a cat crate in very low light giving her food and water. I had to repeat this again on the third day as she laid an egg - for her a large egg. After the second time returning the prolapse to its correct position I kept the preparation H just inside her vent for three more days. Then I used KY jelly (plain) daily for a further week just on the inside of her vent. She is now back with the flock and laying eggs ok. I do use the KY jelly weekly just to lubricate her vent so the eggs will slide out better. You might have to just use the perpetration H to shrink the prolapse until the swelling is down enough to use your finger to put it back in position. Pictured is vent back in position. I had to trim the feathers around her vent. Can't get photo to upload from my iPad. Will add it later. Good luck. I hope you are successful.

Preparation H is witch hazel. You have to lubricate the vent tissue and push it back inside, then hold it there. If it comes back out, keep trying to push back. It could be too late since it has been out too long, but give it a try. Honey or sugar are also good for helping to reduce the swelling.
