Hi! My pekin duck who is 1 year old, started hobbling since today, I don't understand why, yesterday he was perfect, he was running and playing with her girlfriend, even when I saw him before going to school he was perfect, and then I came back and he just stay sitting down, he's eating/drinking/pooping as normally, I am really worried, it breaks my heart looking at him like this, he's a really active duck:hit
sorry about my english, I am not a native speaker

apparently this the one that is making him hobbling

Your English is great.

Pekins can sprain their legs. Painful, but easily treatable. Takes some time.

They also can get bumblefoot, an infection - generally it starts as a lump and then if not fixed, becomes a swollen foot and leg and can become fatal.

Feel the leg and the foot, look closely all over.

Any bumps?
Any swelling?
Any very warm places?
Scrapes?
Blood?

I missed finding a thorn in Romy's foot for a day - I did not see it the first time I looked. So take your time, maybe get a helper to hold the duck (beautiful duck!) so you can get a good look.

If it is a sprain, make an Epsom salt compress. 2 tablespoons Epsom salt, half a cup of warm water. Soak a clean cloth in that. Gently hold the duck and wrap the cloth around the leg and foot. Wait patiently together for ten minutes if you can both go that long.

Do this twice a day.

Epsom salt is a laxative, do not let the duck drink or eat it.

Some members put the Epsom salt water into a flat-bottomed dish and stand the duck in it, holding the duck gently. Remember, no drinking the water.

I like to use comfrey and St. John's wort on the outside of the leg and foot for sprains. I have a cream called Traumeel that has those things in it, and I put a tiny dab on the leg at night (they don't swim at night).

If it is bumblefoot, you do not have to cut the bumble if it is small, you just need to either put triple antibiotic ointment (no painkiller) on the foot twice a day until it clears, which can take 3 or 4 weeks, or follow this advice:

From Haunted55
On July 1st, I found one of my Pekin ducks with what I would consider a bad case of Bumblefoot. Both feet were involved and I'm ashamed to say, the only way I found it was she was limping. One foot had 7 and the other had 3. I was able to grab her and bring her into the house and put her into a warm bath to clean and soak. Two water changes later and softened feet, all I had time to do was paint the bumbles with colorless iodine, grabbed the wrong stuff, and put her into a dog crate in my house until I could get everything ready to operate and get them gone. Did I mention the thought of this scared me half to death?

Sad to say it took 6 days before i was able to get everything together and someone to help out with the 'cure'. The following pictures are what we found after the bath we gave before the planned surgery to remove these things.

As can be seen, there really wasn't much to operate on, even though I was prepared to do just that. No matter how much squeezing or prodding or soaking, there just wasn't anything more to come out, it was all on the scabs that were covering the sores. The swelling was down from the 'marbles' I saw when I first found them. I poured betadine over the ones I had opened and painted the ones that I hadn't again with the iodine and put her back into her crate with clean bedding.

the next pictures are of the same Pekin and anothe duck, Dottie the Mallard, who was also found limping.

As can be seen in the first two pictures, the bumbles have been dramatically reduced on the Pekin with just the iodine application and the smaller ones totally gone. The last four pictures are of the Mallard who is still under going the iodine applications.

As can be seen, this is how the left and right foot look tonight on the Pekin duck. The heels being the worst are still showing infection and need for more treatment. tomorrow, I will again give a bath and pull/cut out the scabbing and treat with straight iodine this time. These spots are now flat or as flat as they should be considering the part of the foot they are on. I will still touch up the places that had the spots before as well.

thank you, your answer were really useful, since I didn't found any kind of bump I decided to take him with the vet, he told me he was fine and gave him an analgesic for 5 days and worked pretty good, but this last week seems like its back, so I assume that he sprain his leg again, I going to try the epsom salt compress, thank you again!
