Blue Orpingtons

Oh my gosh. So cute. It's interesting that you have Americaunas as well as that was the other breed that was suggested to me as friendly, attractive birds. I bet they're bringing a lot of joy to the retirement home. 4H is such a great way to be involved in the community and learn about the fun and responsibility of taking care of animals. Kudos to you for helping your son be involved. I am starting to look into breeders and what is available. It is handy to have friends lol.

Yes, they were very excited to see all these beautiful animals from horses, pigs, goats and chickens. I love these group of kids and their parents. Community service and responsibility is so important to instill in kids today.

I hope you find a good source for chicks or chickens. They have brought us much joy and source of entertainment. Our girls have not started to lay yet, but we look forward to getting fresh eggs from them. Good luck and Welcome! BYC has really helped me learn a lot about caring for these lovely birds.

I like the chunnel. I've seen a couple set ups where they've used chicken wire for fencing and strung fishing line above to deter predators but this seems much more efficient - and attractive. Do you move the Chunnel at all to give them a different area to scratch at or is it stationary?

Here is the coop without the chunnel attached to the bottom door. Now I wish I would have out the chunnel door on the other side, so I could open the coop door to clean in the morning. Now I have to wait until the afternoon to clean the coop when I let them free range. The coop is small, and I have sand as the litter, and I use a cat pooper scooper to clean, and it only takes a couple minutes, and little to no smell.

I love the sand and scoop technique. Sounds very workable. And thanks for the warm welcome to BYC. It's encouraging to hear about the joys of backyard chickens.
