Is there some way to tell the difference between a small duck egg and a large chicken egg?

My ducks sometimes lay in my chicken nests. Sylvia

My duck eggs are always dirty looking, while the chickens are clean. Also the duck eggs are an off white color not clean white. What kind of ducks & Chickens do you have. Some chickens lay brown or colored eggs.

Most of the time my duck eggs are covered with mud but sometimes they lay in with the chicken eggs and then they are clean. Lately they have been laying their eggs in the hay just outside the run and none of the chickens are laying there right now so even though some of them are small, I know they are duck eggs. Most of my chickens lay brown, blue/green or a pinkish color of eggs but sometimes I will find a large white one in the nest when I know the ducks haven't been near it.

I don't know what kind of ducks I have. I have 2 white hens, one that looks like a beige/white Indian Runner and a black drake. None of them had the breeds listed on the containers they were in at the feed store where I bought them. My Cornish Cross hens and ducks came from a feed store with no breeder to tell me what they were.

When I bought the other chicks the guy told me what they were but I didn't write it down and now I'm sorry I didn't. The ones I got from this guy are purebreds. He brings chicks to a local feed store every other Saturday. Some of them are Ameracauna and I think one is a Buff Orpington and I don't know the name of the breed with the feathers on their feet. I just love them. Sylvia

Ok, I was looking at pictures of Ameraucaunas and I think my red rooster is one. So some of the eggs I have should breed true when he breeds to my Ameraucauna hens. Sylvia

I think you have two pekin a fawn and white runner and a Cayuga. My Cayuga lays black tinted eggs, but the others lay off white eggs. I have EE that look kinda like americaunas and I hatched one of the eggs so I am excited to see what it looks like.

When I can figure out what is wrong with my camera, I will post some pictures. It is dead and I can't find where to replace the batteries so it might charge by being plugged into the computer. I never read manuals. LOL

Are Pekin always white? Do they ever have the curly feathers on the back of their heads? I had 2 I bought at the same time as the runner and one of them had the curly feathers on the back of her head. She came up missing, I am assuming it was a predator.

If the drake is a Cayuga and he breeds to the white ducks, would the eggs ever have a black tint? What do you mean by a black tint? Is that kind of on the inside of the eggs? Some of the eggs look bruised inside. Sylvia

Hi duckobsessed
I have three 4-5 month old Muscovy ducks and three chooks about the right age to start laying. Up until last week we were convinced that the ducks were all boys but now we are not sure we've had chooks before and the eggs that we collected this week have a slight greenish offwhite colour to them and very smooth shell.
Could my ducks be laying now.
