First Run of Cornish Cross Meat Birds and Super Excited!

I'm not trying to make CXX anymore. None of my hens eggs were fertile and she has passed now so I am going to pick a breed and breed PBs. I like mutts but I am not helping the poultry world by breeding them. If I like the Buckeyes I might get abunch of those and Either EE or a white egg layer so we can tell the Buckeye egg from the others... Just an idea... But hope to make it a reality.

I know that feeling too. I am setting eggs today, I was just disinfecting them I have about 6 toad eggs. I was thinking setting these again and expecting them to hatch or even be fertile fits the definition of insanity. Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome...sigh..

Yeah. I always had the "this time will be different" feeling every time I set her eggs but look how that turned out...

I've had almost 100% hatch rates on the. slow broilers. Now trying to figure who or what is crossed with what will keep me awake for months to come.lol I will be starting another incubator full today. This batch (since I'm home now )I can watch for signs of the hybrid vigor.

I was initially dissatisfied with the growth rates of the slow broilers. After having Cx nothing else comes close!! That aside, the slow growers have the same gentle disposition as the Cx, they stay IN the pen. They lay early and reliably and are not(so for)
inclined to extreme broodiness. All in all I have to give them a thumbs up.

The possible crosses are slow x giant, slow x dark cornish and any combination of the above. the newest eggs also have barred rocks, black copper marans, and one lonely colored Dorking.lol

I might try to get you to send me about 10 or 12 of those slow growers...really don't want 25 of 'em.

I just ordered our first batch of Cornish Cross Birds, any tips some of you "seasoned meat birders" could share? We're not new to chickens, just meat birds.

\DO NOT OVERFEED them... You will think they are starving they are not. no more than 30 minutes a day in the chow! 15 minutes morning and night!\

Lots of water... LOTS

Make sure the water and feed are as far away as you can get them so they need to walk to live.

We currently feed our layers 2x per day they get fodder and grain - will that work for these guys also? Should we keep them in a different coop?

YES keep them separate if you feed them like you do layer you will have dead chicks.

When I say twice a day for 15 minutes I mean that, after the 15 minutes take the feed away, If you free range them do not feed them in the morning. Just 20 minutes at night. NEVER leave the left over feed. It will kill them eventually.

Also they will need a high protein started for a few days.
