I like the Faverals I don't think I spelled that right. They are a big bird with interesting plumage with their fluffy feet. They are good layers and don't seem to go broody all the time like my Light Sussex birds do.

where's the category for our Rhode island reds!!!!!

They have the biggest personalities!!

Loyal with huge attitudes!

The questions shouldn't by "why" but rather "why not". I have various breeds in my mixed flock: leghorns, ovambos, Potch koekoes, austrolops and orpingtons (black and buff) and the orpingtons are by far my favourite, especially the buffs. The leghorns were the first members of the flock and I was very disappointed that I bought them. They are stand-offish, skittish, extremely territorial and aggressive and their eggs are really small. The rooster was a mean ******* - he was named Hitler for a very good reason. The pullets are also difficult to tell from the cockerels and I ended up with more roosters than hens because the breeder incorrectly sexed them. The large amount of roosters terrorized the poor handful of hens and they were very unhappy. Never mind the bunch of crazy roosters that acted like a pack of wolves and attacked any human in sight. They were just awful.

At that point I almost gave up on keeping chickens and wanted to rehome them, when I bought the orpingtons and austrolorps and my whole attitude towards chickens changed. They are truly amazing. They are fluffy, curious, good-natured and their eggs are enormous. I just love the way they "talks" and hop towards you when you give then treats.

Austrolorps and koekoes come in joint second as they are very similar to the the orpingtons. The koekoek rooster is ancient and we call him Barbosa, because his comb resembles the character of Pirates of the Carribean's hat. The ovambos are curious and provide us with hours of entertainment as they catch frogs and even snakes!

I'm going to start breeding with my orpingtons soon (there seems to be a demand for them in the area). Even if the chicks don't sell, I won't mind having a thousand of them hopping around the yard.
