How to Grow a Blueberry Bush

[/I]Got two planted the week before. They seem to be taking to the soil without alot of admendments. I want to plant more (100) but not sure how i want to divide up space and work ground. Spacing and rows. Might take a bit of planning.

At least 10' between rows of plants, and could be 12', depending on how large you want the individual plants. 5' between plants in a row is a standard, and could be 6'. This plant spacing is commercial type spacings. You can space them farther apart if you want them to develop naturally and with a full spread. With 100 plants it sounds like you want more of a production model. If that is the case, I would recommend 10' spacing of rows, and 5' or 6' spacing of plants. Keep the plants pruned where you can reach them.

Some individual Rabbiteyes can grow very large.

One thing I've noticed with wild blueberries, we have a spot were the chickens had basically eradicated them. The roots were still left in the ground though. I dumped a 6-8 inch layer of pine needles and maple leaves on top, and now there are new plants growing up through that mulch as it's decomposing. It really seems to protect them nicely. The chickens still dig in that area, but the blueberry plants are less stressed.

And then a pic I meant to share weeks ago:

This is what all the wild blueberries looked like a few weeks ago. Now they have dropped their flowers, but unless we experience a drought, we're going to have one heck of a blueberry season.

Thanks once again for your insights. From you and the nursery i was thinking 8 to 10 feet i think 12 would be better. The space here allows. Most small farms in this area grow tomatoes and everyone has chickens. We are looking for something different. I haven't found any rabbiteyes yet. But it seems to be the one mentioned the most for production.

What a lovely plant!!! Lovely flowers, and lovely berries to come. ANd one of the loveliest plants in the fall, too.

Hope you dont have a drought!! We are already low on water this year. Trying to water what we can.
