I have a question for anyone who ties flies (for fishing)

What kind of condition is the skin in? Is it flexible at all? If nothing else, the fur would probably make fantastic dubbing for nymphs.
The hide was salted and stretched only so it's kind of crinkly and stiff, but the skin is thin enough you can manipulate it a little.

Do you guys think I would get in trouble if I picked up a road killed beaver and preserved the hide? I saw one last year and almost went back for it to bleach the skull for a novelty item, but SO said not to it might be illegal to possess without a tag... I am not interested in trapping beaver, I won't kill anything I'm not going to eat unless it is harassing or killing my birds. Road kill it seems to me ought to be okay to take. (It sounds kinda gross to me but if its fresh should not be too much trouble.)

How about nutria hides for flies? There are tons of those in OR, about an hour from me and they are considered a pest, there was even a bounty on them at one time. They are invasive escapees of some fur farmer, so I presume the fur on them is nice.
It's usually illegal to pick up roadkill but I've seen too much of it go to waste. If someone hits a deer in front of me, my freezer just got fuller. Same goes for anything with a really nice hide in my book.

A lot of times, if you call your county game warden, they'll give you permission to pick up road kill. Mine stopped by the next day to drop me a note saying he had allowed it. Too bad he retired. I don't know if it would be so easy with the new one.

Thanks Dragons4u! I do have a warden I know who helped us out once before, maybe I'll call him if I see something again.

Ok, so I have tons of feathers from my peafowl and golden pheasants. I have no idea what to do with all these feathers but I meticulously pick each one out of the pens every day during molt. Here is pretty much one or more of each... my favorite are the golden's cowl feathers, the yellow fan shaped ones with two black bars.

That's a nice collection you got for just picking them off the ground. I use pheasant tails in nymph bodies, especially flashback pheasant tail nymphs, the peacock herl would be great for nymph thoraxes or the bodies of prince nymphs. Whenever I see the golden pheasant tippets I can't help but think of the very old-school classic Arizona fly, the peacock lady.

Google is going to come in handy today.

two words. Peacock Herl.
