Egg Song! Glorious Egg Song!

Hey Calickicken it seems like you have your hands full. Never had a bantam. Do you just hatch the quail or do you raise them? I have often wondered how difficult it would be to raise them and what kind of investment/ set up costs would be associated with it. We have 2 white Cochins and 2 Buff but are full sized. We like to chill outside and watch the birds as well.

Aw. Right on. Congrats.
PI am so excited and happy for people who are excited and happily expecting or just got first egg/s form their chickens.
It's kinda like going in the delivery room with my wife when she delivered my children. Oooops! Better be careful here eh. Never know who may read this.
Very little "kinda like"....
Now indeed when/if you/we/us "chicken people" are around when the gal/s hatch out an egg/s. yup....Kind of addicting.

Thanks!
Yes, I wanted enough eggs for myself and some friends who can't have chickens.  Now all my neighbors want eggs too.  Already planning an addition to the coop for another 10 or so hens!

LOL. Yes. I know the road well. LOL. Good luck my friend. Enjoy. It can be a challenge, nice challenge nonetheless, but if you are going to do it because you love it....more power to ya.

It actually got to the point where I got 5 dozen eggs a day pretty well all year round. People were bringing me "gifts" of veggie scraps, grain, grit, oyster shell, you name it, as well as empty cartons to refill for them. I essentially got free eggs and roasts(etc) via these gifts.
By the way, now that I'm semi-retired, I WORK HARDER THAN I DID WHEN I WAS WORKING!.LOL
That being "exclaimed", this little physical labor I expend on my birds is easier on my entire being. A joy to work with these little creatures.

Sorry to be so excited but I'm new to chickens. While raking out their run earlier, I heard my oldest RIR Holly Hobby singing her song in the coop. I'm 100% sure that's what it is since I've been checking out videos on youtube that show hens doing their Egg Song. She's around 17 or 18 weeks old and I know that is young but she's had a beautiful, beet red comb/waddle/face for weeks now. No egg but I'm thinking that means she's practicing before the big event. I really expected my Black Star's to lay first because they're about the same age but I'll take what I can get. LOL And, who knows, maybe they'll score 1st and aren't as eager to announce it as she is? Thanks for your patience in letting me ramble. :)

My RIR beat all of the other to the first egg too! So exciting!

I have a Black Sex Link that is on day 5 of laying, she's about 20 wks the rest of the flock joins in the singing. I've seen many videos of hens laying and making all kinds of sounds, the only way I know she's layed is if I see her run back in the coop, I've seen her lay 2 while cleaning the roost and it was like nothing to her. Is that normal?

I just hatch the quails...although they are the friendliest little babies ever!!! Every time anyone goes near the brooder or puts a hand in, they all try to snuggle up on my hand....this year 9 of them LOL!!! I have never kept any to raise, so not sure how that works

Mine go back and forth. She will be loud sometimes and others she has laid an egg and is completely quiet

One of my (2) 5 month old EE started laying, 4 eggs in 4 days. Then last night with all the 4th explosions I hoped it wouldn't affect her. Well no egg today so I'm waiting for them to go to the coop but no there both hanging out in front of the outside nest box. Then they both start hollering & cackling and singing an one jumps in the box. Now it's getting dark and they seem torn between going to the coop or the nest box. Now the (2) 14 week old Golden Comets start getting excited and join in. Then I hear the neighbors start talking. Finally they gave up and went to the coop. This is the first time they made a lot of noise, I couldn't stop laughing.

My BS just started laying on the 4th of July. Being a talkative chicken I expected an interesting egg song. Yesterday I disturbed her on the nest during feeding. She went back in, so I waited for her song on the porch. She came out of the coop let out 1 short Braaagh and went about her business. She made me laugh, I was expecting more.
