Ok so i have several different type of laying hens. I went out this afternoon just to check on them and give them some treats. I noticed one of my Red Sex Links was in the coop and just was not coming out. I went in and carried her out were i could check on her. At first i was worried something had happened like a fight but she was just slightly limp and not really responsive. Her eyes where a different color than normal, she would not stand or sit she just kind of fell over when sat down. She had one loose greenish looking stool when i laid her down and had some liquid come out of her mouth then had a seizure and died. She had not been acting funny at all today and it never got above 80 here today and their coop and run is in the shade. They have three nipples on the waterer in the run and it is still over half full. The small duck pan was still half full and she had ate this morning.

I'm not sure what has happened to her and really would like to know what has happened and if my other chickens/ducks might be at risk.
She is a red sex link. She had a partially full crop, and she had been at the waterer earlier when i was out there feeding them.

These kinds of deaths are difficult to know the answer to because it can be a lot of things from a heart attack, to dehydration, crop or gizzard blockage, egg binding, mites, worms, or just some other internal issue. How old was she? Was she laying eggs? A necropsy by your state vet would probably get you an answer, but also by doing one yourself at home, you could look at the intestines and the gizzard for blockage, and for anything abnormal about liver and abdomen. Green stools can mean that she wasn't eating enough. Sorry for your loss.

Quote: She was less than a year old she hadn't went through her yearly molt yet.

As far as I know no she wasnt laying at the time. She also didnt have any palpable masses like she should if she was eggbound. Ive only had her roughly a month. A friends child does 4h and had been raising them and she had to many so i had gotten three red sex link laying hens off her.

She showed no signs of dehydration her turgor was fine when i tugged on her leg skin.

Just some things to put out there: chickens can be exposed to new strains of coccidiosis, an intestinal disease, when they move to new soil with a new owner. Also worms should be treated, and skin should be examined for presence of lice and mites. If she wasn't laying, that would be odd if she was nearly a year old. When you said the eyes weren't a normal color, did you mean that the whitish third eyelid (nictitating membrane) was covering the eye, or was the eye actually different colored or unusual-looking? Here is a link about coccidiosis: http://www.the-chicken-chick.com/2012/12/coccidiosis-what-backyard-chicken.html

Ok i use garlic in their feed at least once a week to help protect them.
I had just checked all my chickens the other day for mites or lice and found no evidence anywhere on any of them, not even on my ducks.

I assume it was not laying because she was about to molt because one of the other chickens that I got at the same time has started her molt.
But then again she could have been laying an I just dont know because i have five red sex links, and three im not sure of (though the black one has feathers on her feet and the two white ones have black in their wing tips and one has some feathers on her legs) laying hens and a light sussex. Of them one of the unsure ones and the light sussex have been broody since i got them, and two of the red sex links where molting when i got them so Im not truly certain who all is laying though i know at least one of the unsure ones is because i have a colored and speckled egg every other day. Ive been getting between four and six eggs every day. Im not sure exactly what colors which birds should be laying i have two that are laying white at least three that are laying brown and at least one that is laying a speckled/colored egg.

It appeared like her eyes where reddish not the normal golden hue she has always had.
