So I am learning to breed white silkies and I need to learn some tips about selection. I bought a standard and have been studying it.

I am sort of thinking that the first step of selection would be to go through all the birds and eliminate anything that had a disqualification. So that would narrow the birds down some.

I know that some of the males in the line I have have too many hard feathers in their tail, so I have to select against that,

Then would I look at the over all shape of the bird next? or the head points? ( crest, comb, beard, ect)

What process do you go through when you start to select your breeders?

Everyone has their own techniques for selection, but realize that silkies are a slow maturing breed, and selecting too early you can toss what might end up an outstanding bird. In general, you want to look at the overall bird first. Which birds keep drawing your eye when you are watching the flock? Which ones make you say "WOW! what a gorgeous bird!"? Take those few and start looking at more specific details...comb, toes, feathering, size, colour, pattern ...

Figure out which negatives are easy vs difficult to eliminate.
