I have a Black Copper Marans pullet, who's about 16 weeks old, still a little young to start laying, and she isn't showing any behavior signs that would indicate she's about to start producing eggs. Her comb and wattles have however started to grow and turn red during this past week. They are now the same size and color as our Finnish Alho landrace which has been laying for two weeks. She could start a bit early since we're getting over 19 hours of sun per day at the moment.

If anyone has any pictures from about within a week of when their Black Copper Marans pullets started laying, I would appreciate it if you could share them. I would especially like close ups of their combs and wattles.

To bump this thread a bit, I thought I'd post a picture of Wilma, the pullet mentioned earlier. As I said, she's 16 weeks old, and not laying yet, but the comb and wattle are starting to develop. So if anyone has any good comparison pictures of their BCM's who have just started to lay, don't be shy, share them.

Ok, since no one is responding, I might as well turn this into a study in the development of Wilma's comb and wattles as she reaches egg laying maturity. Here's a picture from today, she was born on March 18 2014, so she's 17 weeks today. In the five days since her last picture, you can see some development. I also heard her practicing her egg song today. Our roo isn't showing interest in her yet, but she seems to be Switzerland in our pecking order, so it might be that he doesn't know how to react to her. Or then chickens try to avoid incest, as they share the same father. The older pullets that he is mating are a lot smaller.

Hi Vehve, I don't have any experience with this breed, I would say that laying should not be very far away. I'm very interested with your weekly study, keep it up and certainly looking forward to photos of the eggs:)

I shall document weekly updates until we get our first egg (which I wasn't expecting for another 2 months, but we'll see).

I'll wait until next week before posting pictures of her comb and wattle again, but today was the first time I saw our rooster show interest in her. She has also been checking out the egg nests briefly, and practicing her egg song.

What does she look like now?
Patience, patience

Here's Wilma today, 18 weeks old. Still no eggs, but she's checking out the nests on a daily basis, the rooster is servicing her every once in a while (though more seldom than others, might be because she's almost bigger than him at the moment), and she's been practicing her egg song.

She has grown in size since last week too.
