Hi everyone. Recently our dog and tortoise needed to be wormed. I'm concerned about the chickens now. Should we go ahead and worm them? With what? Should we put them on a schedule? Also, is there a way that worms can get into the eggs? What can we do to prevent the chickens from getting worms? Thanks!

Hi!, I worm my hens twice a year. I do it in October after they have been free ranging all Summer and then I do it in February because its usually wet between and I was told they are more likely to pick up worms when the ground is wet as it brings them up to the top or something. I use Flubenvet to worm mine. I buy it mixed in with layers pellets and you feed for 7 days (with no treats) and there is no egg withdrawl. If you go onto Google and type in "marriges with flubenvet" you can see what comes up. You can give them stuff like Verm-X as a prev-enter, also ACV as it makes it hard for them to live in an acidic environment and you can also feed pumpkin seeds. The hens will see the pumpkin seeds as a treat, but they are also know as a natural wormer :)

I use Ivermectin, once or sometimes twice a year; it's easy and also kills mites and lice. Fenbendazole is available at the feed store also. The ONLY approved wormer for chickens in the USA is piprazine, which only kills some roundworms, and may now have a withdrawal period. I'm not a fan; it does too little, IMO. Mary

My egg production is way down. I have 6 hens and only get one to three eggs a day. Could this be because of worms?

Dog worms will not infect chickens.

What kinds of worms infect chickens then? My dogs wormer killed roundworms, tapeworms and hookworms. He was confirmed to have roundworms. My tortoise had pinworms. So it seems our property has a variety....

They get round worms & others, but I believe they are species specific. Someone else should chime in.
