I am in the progress of making a chicken coop and run, I need some ideas on the best waterers and feeders. Thanks

@Gallo del Cielo

Thank you, and I will check it out! I just need to know what works best thanks.

There are so many options out there. How many birds are going to need to feed and water? For watering I'd highly recommend a nipple waterer. That can be as simple as a couple poultry nipples in the bottom of a five gallon bucket. Nipple waterers can be made relatively inexpensively and keep the water clean.

I am looking at feeding and watering around 5-6 hens and I've looked into the nipples and find that some of them leak.

Yes, sometimes they do leak. However, if you start with a good quality nipple and install it properly, they won't leak. I've made dozens of nipple waterers in five gallon buckets for myself, friends and neighbors and none have ever leaked. I have two now that are five years old and have never leaked. I like them because they keep the water clean.

ETA: I see you live in NE where freezing will be an issue. Perhaps horizontal nipples might be better for your situation. You can find them on ebay.

Thanks! I will try those! And I have seen automatic feeders, where the birds spread the feed themselves, is that true?

I'm not sure. I'm only familiar with one type of auto feeder as you're describing and it's called a trigger feeder. People like them because it gives access to the feed to your chickens and not things like wild birds, rodents and squirrels. Here is a thread on that type of feeder.

You can get horizontal nipples directly from Susan Hasbrouk (a fellow BYC member!) at allboutchickens.com. They don't leak if installed correctly. She's on eBay as well if you want to price shop. Just type in "horizontal poultry nipples"
