The Best layers!

I'm thinking of getting a few new chooks for my flock, and I realised the other day that most of our breeds aren't good egg layers. So if anyone knows or has a a certain breed that lays well feel free to post about them.
I have been looking at breeds like Orpingtons, Sussex, Barnevelder, etc, so I would also like to hear some opinions about them aswell.

Go with a red sex-link hybrid if you're into egg quantity. Not a pure breed, but less flighty and waay more calm than leghorns. Try Cinnamon Queens...they've got a nice temperament and fluffy butt from the SLW in them..

Actually, Cinnamon Queens are Red Sex Links (just another of many labels including Brown Sex Link, Gold Sex Link, Bovans Brown, Golden Buff, Golden Comet, Hubbard Golden Comet, Isa Brown, Shaver Brown, Babcock Brown, Warrens, Bovans Goldline, etc. under which Red Sex Links are sold by hatcheries), and not all hatcheries that market under the label Cinnamon Queen use Silver Laced Wyandotte hens for the silver gene. Cackle Hatchery for example, uses Rhode Island White hens for their Cinnamon Queens (http://www.cacklehatchery.com/cinnamonpage.html). Other silver gene hens used in Red Sex Links include White Rocks, Delawares, and Light Sussex, but no matter which red gene roo (RIR, NHR, or Production Red) and which silver gene hen is used, Red Sex Links are egg laying machines. However they are not the only sexl inked egg laying machines. Black Sex Links are produced by crossing a red gene roo with a barred hen (usually a Barred Rock) and they lay just as many, and as good a quality eggs as the Red Sex Link. Murray McMurray Hatchery, which markets their Black and Red Sex Links under the name Stars, states that there is no difference in their laying ability (http://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com/faqwhichbreedlaysbetterredstar.html). Actually, despite MMs statement, I slightly prefer the Black Sex Links as they have been friendlier and laid slightly better in cold weather than my Red Sex Links, but you can't go wrong with eggs for either of them.

Never thought about sex-links! I have thought about leghorns but I have heard that they are loud and can be flighty, which I don't want. I'll try and inform myself about the cinnamon queens

It's no problem. It happens surprisingly often. )

Leghorns set the record for most eggs laid Ina year and they lay large -extra large eggs. The downside to leghorns is that they are flighty. They are also not very cold hardy because they were developed in Italy. I would say a friendly cold hardy layer would be a wyondotte.
