HELP! Chickens slaughtered?

Thank you all for the advice, I will probably put up some sort of camera in the future.

Not sure if these links work, I'm going to post them and see. One of them is a picture if my pen, it comfortably fit all of the animals with plenty of room, it may seem empty in this photo because I cleaned and took out a lot of their houses, tree perches, food and water etc. There was a plan to build a big coop that attached to the side in the later months. This pen was just built a few months ago, and we were working on upgrading before the chickens were killed :(

The other photo is if the hole dug under the pen, it's fairly big

I should mention that my best best so far is either a racoon or a fisher. Doesn't seem big enough to fit a coyote, and we rarely see foxes where I live

Took a closer look at your pics...the hole the scumbag dug is rather 'square' so I now think it was a raccoon. While I realize you and your family are devastated you need to address the problems with your setup, and there are a few.

I enlarged your photos. First off you need to get rid of that chicken wire and use 1/2" hardware cloth all around. When you do you need to "apron" it...here's a diagram and photo as examples:

Your gate: You need to beef that door up...the wooden bar swivel needs to go. Use a latch that a raccoon can't use it's hands to simply lift it up and gain access...believe me, they can and will get that door open.

Again, so very sorry for your loss...wipe away the tears, take a deep breath, and get to fixin' that coop...wishing you all the best!

Thank you so much. It is obvious that many upgrades and repairs are going to need to be made to make everything more suitable and permanent for my animals in the future, but I believe I am more knowledgeable and equipped to prevent this from happening again now :/ its certainly unfortunate for my poor chickens and ducks, but at least I've learned from this.

For now, I'm going to get to filling in that hole, fixing that pen and setting things up again. :)

I am so sorry for your loss :( It's very sad to lose our critters like that. Every one hear is mentioning foxes, raccoons, etc. I have had the same thing happen to me before and we discovered that it was a possum :( They are very nasty and usually drag the birds away just to eat their heads and necks off leaving the bodies behind. I would definitely watch for them because they will continue to come back. As I said, very nasty. The only reason we figured out what was getting our chickens was by catching it. Good Luck and again, very sorry for your loss.
