BREWING BEER 101 & mastering it

I Googled breweries in our area and found one that is great about letting us pick up the spent grain.  I have to get it a few hours after they put it outside in a 55 gallon barrel (or it might start to go bad & attract pests). Still, I put it wet in ziploc bags and put it in the freezer.  Still plenty to share with friends.  The chickens like it.  Just trying to cut down on the feed bill, and keep the biddies happy!

I think the brewery liked the idea of someone a) removing the spent grain right away; and b) giving back to the community.  Yea!!!

How awesome..

I'm getting ready to purchase some hops plants from a guy on eBay. I haven't had any luck with the rhizomes the two times I've planted them(they grow a spindly vine and then die) and he says he sells "crowns" or the whole plant, so we'll see...

I'm so interested to learn more about brewing beer, it's such a lovely process, not to mention tasty (if done right). :drool

Did you get any crowns?

City Farm - I just noticed your post in the "plant trade" thread about hops. I grow them at my greenhouse, for container sales. I am in Michigan. I can tell you, they require A LOT of water and food. They are also very susceptible to aphids and spider mite in my climate.

In Bruges,Belgium the leaders approve a underground pipeline. Under the cobblestone streets, somewhere around 6000 liters of beer will be traveling.. Crazy...
