Serama Hatch-A-Long!!

Pics
That little one's a total cutie! I got a couple in my latest hatch that look similar and I'm completely smitten... and also hoping one or both is mottled! :) What is the difference between a blue and a black, is a blue just lighter? Yeah I keep thinking I need to get that Serama Colours book. So my latest group hatched a couple days ago. I originally set 23 eggs, all were fertile but in the end only 8 hatched. I hand turned them this time and 17 made it to lockdown... On the upside I'm getting kind of overwhelmed with birds so I'm glad there weren't 23 chicks! But there's definitely a problem here. I'm thinking maybe either I'm not getting the incubator completely disinfected, or there's something wrong with the breeder diet. I also experienced some issues this time with pipping. One pipped too low and died. Another went low but came out fine. A third pipped but couldn't zip, thankfully I was able to hatch it out with no trouble. I think maybe keeping them on their sides and hand turning caused this? Not sure but I will try the Brinsea rails and auto turner again next time. At any rate, this is my last hatch for awhile. I want to let these birds all grow out and get some sold before I hatch again. I'm going to get some of that fancy disinfectant solution before I store the incubator away and put my birds on vitamins for a month or so before I start hatching again. And here are the little peanuts! All the different colors! So addicting! :love
So cute!!

Update pics! Babies are 10-12 days old depending on exact hatch date. I'm really loving this group, total sweeties.

Two with silkied feathers, rest are smooth. One in the third pic looks like it's already getting a pop of color in the comb.

Adorable babies and beautiful photos! I LOVE those chicks in the first photo!

Thank you! I'm pretty sure half the reason I have chickens is so I can photograph them. In case you couldn't tell.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how the two in the first pic feather out in the next couple months. They were the runts of this hatch.

I am so glad they are hatching for you! What kind of incubator are you using?

I have the rcom kingsuro max 20 incubator. I removed the water pump though. Much more efficient that way. I have never had a hatch lower than 50% in it. This time I turned in egg cartons, not the automatic turner

Hey guys! Thought I'd post an updated pic of my goofy little singleton, Zippy. She's so funny.

She is a cute little lap bird! I was thinking your singleton was a boy, that is nice that you ended up with a hen.

I hatched one Serama at New Years and he was a bit ahead of the silkies I hatched so he was loud and kept me awake so I gave him to a little hen. She wasn't even broody but she adopted him. It has been almost 3 weeks now so she was getting a bit ancy and wanted to go outside but kept leaving her baby behind so I brought him in and chick sat most of the day. We took a nap together and he sat on my shoulder while I did stuff. He even took a little nap on the cat's back. These little birds are just so precious.
