I was thinking about setting up a coop and run for some pheasants for food, fly tieng supplies and for the neighborhood kids for 4-H and FFA if there allowed to do so in my area like im doing with my chickens, anyone have any advise about what breed i should get?. I live in Arizona and it gets hot if that helps or makes any difference.

Assuming you can have them, Red goldens would probably be the best for flys and ease of care. I'm not certain on this, but usually ringnecks would more likely be regulated than ornamentals, but you should still check.

If you are considering pheasants for food your ony real choice would be Ringnecks. The ornamental bids would be too costly and would provide very little meat. Ringnecks would also work well for fly tying. They do require a permit in Arizona but for 50 birds or less it is only five bucks a year for a hobby permit. Ornamentals do not require a license or permit. I have raised Pheasants in Arizona for 18 years and never have lost a bird due to heat. I have had temps as high as 120 and while they require constant work when its that hot, they all made it fine.(a lot of ice water, watermelon and misting) They need shade and water during the summer but unless it gets above 110 they do well on their own. Hope this helps a little.

Thx guys your info really helped me, i think ill go ringneck just for the duel purpose of food and fly tieing material.

How many square feet does each pheasant need? I am thinking about getting Ringneck pheasants, but I wanted to make sure I have enough room for them in my aviary.

Each state has their own requirements for ringnecks,so you would have to ask your local fish and game dept. They also require a permit to raise them.
In N.H.,Tony.

in arizona do you have a lot of gambels quail or california quail that because they are suited fro that heat pheasants like ring necks would be better if you just keep them for meat or dog training but ornamentals would be fine as long as they are not black ring necked or any strain of ring neck

What part of Arizona do you live in. If you go to Craigslist, then to the state of Arizona type Pheasants in the search bar. You'll find quite a few people living in Arizona that breed pheasants.
