Hello! I accidentally ended up at a small livestock auction 2 weeks ago tomorrow, and ended up bringing home these five babies. All the other birds were being sold in lots of 25 or 50 and these guys were supposedly the same breed as my favorite chicken and I couldn't stand to let them go to a probable home of cages. They were labeled as blue Cochins. Feathery and fluffiness aside, I am not sure they are? Although I've read that blue Cochins can breed into black or splash so I'm wondering if that is what I've ended up with? Also, my Ruby is from an extremely reputable breeder so maybe some of the differences are due to being from hatchery stock?

My other question is that four out of the five suggest cockerels to me. There is a clear difference between the feathering and combs of those four compared to the other one. Also, the lone probable pullet is feathering out at the same rate my Ruby did, who turned out to be a pullet. I can't keep multiple roos, and already have one, so I'm really hoping I'm wrong, because I worry about rehoming these guys since I have no idea about where they came from, and I know people look for roosters less. And I don't want them to become dinner. Okay, here they are.

And the suspected pullet, Lavender. As you can see, much less comb and many more feathers:

So, what do you think? Are they blue Cochins? I think that Plum is possibly black and Prim possibly splash. Clearly none of them are very blue. Am I going to have to find homes for 4 little roosters? They are so sweet, I hope that I am wrong.

Thank you for any help!

At this stage they look like pullets, and prim looks like a splash. The blues can be both dark blue that looks like black (almost) or med which is standard or light which looks like a dark splash. At this age it is hard to tell

Ahh, thanks, I'm really hoping they are pullets! There's no way my not-very-nice neighbors would tolerate multiple roosters.

Is it normal for 2 1/2 - 3 week old pullets to have this sort of comb? Sorry, I'm just really hoping that I can keep these two...

Id say the one at the front ( blue/black) looks like a pullet but I would keep an eye on the white one at the back due to the forming of the wattles. that being said its to early to give you a definite

Yes, I'm really worried about the wattles, too! Prim is really looking like she'll be a beauty when she grows up, I'm just keeping fingers crossed that she's actually a she, though there are some worrying signs. I maybe worry about their little combs too much, but my 7 week old pullet never had a noticeable one. Thanks for the response! :)

Update:

Lavender (pretty sure she's a pullet)

Basil (also pretty sure this one is a pullet)

Clover (the reddening of the combs means cockerel, right?)

Prim (again, does the reddening comb mean cockerel? I assume so but she is so beautiful and I keep hoping not)

And then there's Plum, who is somewhere in between. She has more of a comb than Lavender or Basil, but it hasn't started reddening at all. She's my little cuddle chick and I'm really hoping for pullet.

Any thoughts would be appreciated! And sorry about their bedraggled appearance, they spilled water and made a mess of their brooder earlier...

Oh yes, and also, do you think Plum could be a black cochin? She still seems to be a very different color than the three blues...
