So let me tell you a story about one or my chickens. We call her the wild chicken.

A while ago we got a call from our neighbor asking if one of our chickens had escaped. We told her no, but went to her house to look anyway. We saw this little bantam chicken (we don't have bantams) that was really pretty. She was light brown with white spots on her feathers. She was clean legged and had a single comb. We think she came from the flea market that was nearby. When we tried to catch her (it was still daylight) she ran faster than any chicken I had ever seen. My grandpa and I came back at night to catch her for our neighbor, and we still couldn't catch her.

Weeks pass and surprisingly that chicken still at my neighbors house. No one was feeding her and she was roosting outside at night. We live out in the country and our neighbors are pretty far from us. At that time we had Lakenvelder roosters (which I would not recommend) and they were the noisiest things on earth. Evidentially she heard them from that far away, because one day she was in the run with the rest of my chickens. It was really surprising.

She lived at my coop for a while, but then one day I couldn't find her. At first I was worried a predator had got her, but I had never had any chickens in that coop killed. Then I realized that I hadn't been getting any white eggs (she was my only chicken that layed white eggs) so I thought that she might be broody. After searching for 2 nights I finally found her in a clump of grass. 19 days later, I had a guy over who was going to buy some chickens from me. He said he knew some things about bantams. So I took him over to the nest and it was empty! The only thing that was left were a few egg shells.

The next morning when I went to let the chickens out I saw her sitting right in front of the coop. I get closer and she stands up. She has 8 chicks under her! They were so cute!

A few weeks later I look out and I see a chick laying down. Upon closer examination I determine that someone must have pecked too hard because it's neck was all limp. I decided to bury it right where it hatched out in the field. I put a stump on top to mark it's grave. :hit

Now all of her babies have grown up and currently one of her chicks is my favorite rooster. I don't have any pictures I can post right now of the wild chicken, but I do have a picture of her grown up chickie.

UPDATE: I was looking in the breeds section and happened to see a chicken just like her. I clicked on it and everything fit. I think she is a Pyncheon! I looked them up on google and it said that they were an extremely rare bantam! I can't believe it!

Wow. Does she have that cute tuft of feathers on the top of her head?

No, but the ABA doesn't require a tuft on the head. I wish she had one though!
