Hello everyone,

I have a bit of a problem. I hatched out a female Chinese gosling on 6-21 and she hatched out fine no issues. Well I noticed that she wasn't growing much, like at all. So i started keeping her inside with fresh water and a good gosling starter. Just to make sure that she was eating and not being bullied. I did let her out several times a day to eat grass and bugs and such. Well I let her outside with the older gosling that I have and saw that she was under a little bush grooming her self and picking at the grass. I let her be as it she was fine enjoying the fall like weather in Kentucky. And I checked on her about 2 hours later (got busy cleaning house) and she was in the same spot but had just died. It looked like she fell asleep and just didn't wake up. Does anyone have any ideas as to why she just died. My husband seems to think that there could have been something genetically wrong with her and maybe it caught up to her. There were no outward signs of any trauma or bites. She didn't have diarrhea or anything like that. One of my other goslings is almost 2 months old and was triple her size. She could still fit in my hands. If anyone has had a similar issue and got information as to what happened this would be greatly appreciated so that I know what to look for in the future,.

Thanks

Her failure to thrive was probably indicative of a congenital problem - I think that your husband is correct.

Very sorry for your loss.
Thanks so much Miss Lydia. I was utterly heartbroken. She was so sweet and truly loving. She'd cuddle and give rubs with her head. I wish I knew what happened.

Failure to thrive can happen to any poultry and there really isn't anything you could have done. It seems they just start out that way and don't make any progress. I have only had it happen with one a duck. But it's so very heart breaking because we always feel we should have been able to do something. Next time you hatch start using Brewers yeast right off when you begin feeding maybe 3X a week till 10 weeks old while they are in their fast growing stage, sometimes even a nutritional deficiency can cause problems.

I had it happen with a Brahma chick...the others were fine, it looked just the same as the others when it hatched, but it just grew so slowly, and eventually died....the others are fine.

Angeleyes, so sorry to hear about it. It seems to be that we attach ourselves to the ones that need us most, and then when it doesn´t work out, we suffer the loss even more. But your other gosling will need a friend. Can you find another easily enough where you live?

I have 2 other goslings. A male Chinese and a female Pilgrim. What makes it even sadder is they're calling for her, and looking for her. I have learned to recognize the calls they made to her. And i know I could'nt have done anything .. Just wish i would've been able to do something is all

Most of on here know how you feel, as most of have have lost goslings. There are often losses, it´s the way it is with them.
The other two will get used to it, they´ll be fine. Enjoy your goslings.
