Hi, I am new to this site and I am hoping that someone can help me. I have 6 coturnix quail in an outside pen that is 8 ft x 4 ft. Four females, one male, and one undecided. The "undecided" one came from a different breeder and is a different color (much more red) - it doesn't have the obvious speckled chest of the females, but isn't exhibiting any "male behavior" at this point. He/she is about 6 weeks old. Anyway, he/she isn't really the problem. The problem is the other male, whom we affectionately named Braveheart when he was a sweet little chick living in a large cardboard box in our bathroom. We hatched Braveheart ourselves, and he has always been treated kindly and gently. He is almost 3 months old. About 10 days ago, he suddenly became very aggressive. When I (or my husband) open the pen door to retrieve eggs, Braveheart RUNS over at full speed to peck and bite at our hands. It actually hurts and he has drawn a small amount of blood. He is constantly mating with the females, biting their necks, although I realize that this is normal male quail behavior - but attacking our hands isn't normal, is it? I was hoping that this sudden aggressive attitude was a phase, but it seems to be getting worse, if anything. It is a pain to retrieve eggs or pet one of the sweet females anymore - Braveheart always runs over to attack us! He ignores the "gender undecided" one. Any ideas, anyone?

This may not be the idea you're looking for but if he were here, the next time he pecked me, I'd throw him at the wall.

Actually I'd just clip his neck, no need to bruise the meat.

you will be unlikely to correct this behavior.

Try giving him a good spin a couple of times. In other words hold him in your hand firmly and act like your going to fast pitch a soft ball but don't pitch him!.It has worked for me with a couple of aggressive birds!!

Quail Jailer - haha! Well, that is probably the best advice, but I just don't have it in me to kill him. But perhaps I will give him to someone that is accustomed to processing birds. I think that you are right - we will not be able to correct his behavior - it's just very strange that it started in the first place. I wonder if a raccoon or some other predator was bothering them at night, and this is why he suddenly started attacking us? Well, who knows...

He is probably just being teratorial and protecting what is his. What woukd you do if someone was tryin to steal your soon to be kids lol. I had a rabbit that use to charge at us when we would go to get her babies but she was nutts anyways lol.

Yes it seems to let them know who the boss is.I have done it with several birds Roo's and hens.

when my roo gets a little aggressive i put him in quail jail, i put him under a wire basket with lots of food and water he can see everyone but cant be with them after about a week he settles right down and starts to act normal again ... i dont have to do it often ..
